'38 Cubbies take 3 of 4 from '40 Bums

Season Opener - Ebbets Field
38-Cubs 8, 40-Dodgers 2
B.Lee vs Wyatt

Chicago broke a 2-2 deadlock and the hearts of the Brooklyn faithful, with 2 runs in the top of the 6th.  For good measure the Cubbies added 3 more in the 7th and 1 more in the 9th.  Ripper Collins, who went just 1-4 managed to score 3 runs.  Bill "not the Spaceman" Lee went the distance giving up just 2.

GAME 2
38-Cubs 8, Dodgers 3
C.Bryant vs Hamlin

Same scenario, same results.  The Brooks jumped out to a 2-0 lead only to see the Cubs tied it up with a 2 out solo blast from Gabby Hartnett and a RBI single from Herman in the top of the 4th.  The game remained tied until the Cubbies blew the doors off of the game with 6 runs in the top of the 8th.  Two big ground ball errors helped open the floodgates.  Hartnett was a triple shy of the cycle.
GAME 3 - Wrigley Field
40-Dodgers 7, 38-Cubs 3
Fitzsimmons vs French

"Fat" Freddie Fitsimmons came to the rescue as the Brooks got their first win of the season.  Freddie went 8 innings and gave up just 3 unearned runs.  Brooklyn reversed their fortune from the first two games by going down by 3 in this one and tying it up in the fith.  Joe "Don't call me Ducky" Medwick went 4 for 5 for a Dodger lineup that knocked out 14 safeties.  All Star first sacker Dolph Camilli was the only regular who went hitless, even though he knocked in 2.

GAME 4
38-Cubs 3, 40-Dodgers 1
C.Davis vs Carleton

For the first time in the series the bats took a game off.  On a dreary drizzly day with the wind barely blowing out the ball never threatened to leave the "friendly confines" of Wrigley field.  Cub starter Tex Carleton went 8 and gave up one run on seven hits to get the win  Russell and Root combined to get the final 3 outs as the Cubbies took 3 of 4 to open the season.
